India is a country in the South-Asian Region. The Bay of Bengal to the east, the Arabian Sea to the west, and the Indian Ocean to the south surround India on three sides, making it a peninsula. The Himalayan Mountain Ranges to the north provide India with strong protection.
India is a federal democratic republic with 28 states and 8 union territories. With a population of 1.35 billion, India ranks as the second most populated country globally, following China. And also giving India the title of the ‘World’s Largest Democracy.’
India, being an ancient country, has a lot to teach us and much more to discover yet. India has given the world some of the finest things, from the knowledge of the Mahabharata and Ramayana to the oldest written scriptures of the Vedas, to mathematical concepts like the Hindu-Arabic number system, concepts of calculus, and the invention of zero, to spiritual knowledge, and to some of the most courageous warriors and leaders.
India has been known by various names in the long period of human history. Some of the names are: Aryavarta, Bharatvarsh, Hindustan, Hodu (as in the Biblical Hebrew, mentioned in the Old Testament), Tianzhu (Ancient Chinese, literally meaning ‘Heaven’), Nabhivarsha (Ancient Japanese), and many more.
